Birchbox Unboxing: August 2018

There are few things more validating than getting Birchbox in the mail. Every box comes with a special pick-me-up in the address box. I’ve gotten boxes addressed to the “magnificent Jamie M.” And this month’s box came for “We ❤ Jamie M.”– not quite as grand as “magnificent,” but validating all the same.

It’s a small thing, but it’s the kind of small thing that can really make the difference.

And while we’re on the subject of small things that make a difference, let’s talk about the gorgeous sunset-inspired pattern on this month’s box. It’s just waves of color, but they are beautiful waves of color, and I’m definitely a fan.

And now that we’ve gotten that out of the way, here is what I received in my Birchbox this month.

Birchbox August 2018 1

This month’s theme is “snapshots from summer,” and here’s what Birchbox has to say about it:

This month, we’re savoring the last moments of sweet summertime and reflecting on some highlights from the sun-filled season.

One of those summer highlights for Birchbox has certainly been wave/texturizing spray because this is the third month in a row that I’ve received one of these in my box. Here is the texturizing spray du mois, if you will:

OUAI Wave Spray

I haven’t tried this one yet because I’m still working through the previous two month’s texturizing sprays– I don’t do the touseled look often enough, it seems. But, I will say that just before the summer of texturizing spray,  I did have a night where I was getting ready for a tropical-themed event and I desperately wanted to tousle my hair. But there wasn’t a curl spray or gel to be seen in my house. I tore through every old glam bag and box that I had but there was nothing. So, of course, the next time I went to CVS, I loaded up on curl products because #neveragain. But thanks to Birchbox and my own preparations we can all rest easy knowing that it’s going to be quite a while before I run out of texturizing products.

And with that we move from a summer favorite to a beauty box staple, with this month’s skincare offering, which goes to:

Avène Cleanance Expert

From Birchbox: This lightweight treatment simultaneously moisturizes and mattifies, all while reducing redness and preventing future breakouts.

Too good to be true? I don’t know. But, hey, it’s a moisturizer, and my skin definitely needs that lately.

And now moving from hair/skincare to my favorite part of any subscription box, the makeup products. Or rather the after-makeup products because first up are these makeup wipes:

Vasanti Makeup Magnet Wipes

This is a pack of 10 very small wipes, as I learned a few hours ago when I grabbed what I thought was one wipe but was actually two. But, they did their job and didn’t leave a film on my skin like some makeup wipes do.

This month’s box also celebrates putting makeup on- not just taking it off. Starting with this shadow stick in a champagne tone.

The color here is really subtle, which works well for a shadow stick, I think, since this is definitely a no-fuss makeup option for days when you’re running really late.

And last but not least, is the cherry atop this month’s Birchbox sundae- literally, because this lip product actually smells like cherries. . .

UNBOXING: Birchbox August 2018
Clarins Water Lip Stain in 03 Red

. . . Well, maybe more like cherry cough medicine, but the good kind. This was definitely the most exciting product in this month’s box for me because I love a good lip stain and a nice red statement lip. So, naturally, I couldn’t wait to try this out:

Here I am wearing the Clarins lip stain with my August Ipsy Glam Bag eye makeup look (which you can read all about here ).  The application with this product was a bit tricky because it is water based, so it goes on sheer, and the brush applicator can be a little finicky. So I definitely didn’t get the smoothest application for this look, but I’ll get there.

This was actually the second time I tried this product out. The first time was just minutes after I got my Birchbox when I thought maybe I’d do a wear test and see how long it lasted. And then I intelligently decided to eat soup and a popsicle afterwards, so it really didn’t stand a chance. But, I imagine that under less extreme conditions this stain lasts much longer.

Overall, this month’s box was a real mixed bag for me. It definitely feels like a socks-for-Christmas kind of box. By which I mean, it seems disappointing to get socks for Christmas until the day when all your regular socks have holes in them. On which day you rediscover those Christmas socks hiding behind presents you had been far more excited about at the time (but have since stopped using altogether). And suddenly, you’re mentally making a note to thank grandma for her far-reaching foresight.

That’s this month’s box– a less exciting but much-needed box of Christmas socks with a snazzy lip stain thrown in for good measure.
